Sam Mendes admits that he is the reason for James Bond's death

Sir Sam Mendes has revealed that he blames himself for the on-screen death of iconic character in 2021 film .

The director, who was behind films Skyfall and Spectre from the franchise, shared that despite not being involved in the newest film – his decision to kill ‘s character M during Skyfall could have influenced this.

No Time To Die saw as the 007 British spy for the last time, ending with the character’s first death in 59 years of cinematic history.

Chatting with the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden, the film pro shared: ‘You could say it was my fault because I killed M,’ the director says of his film Skyfall, in which Dame Judi’s spy chief died.

‘That was the first moment in the series when an actual character acknowledged not only dying, but getting older in any way, rather than just being replaced by another actor.

‘[Bond] talked a lot about ageing in Skyfall, and M dying and the changing of the guard.’

Despite there being over 20 films in the franchise and multiple actors who have taken on the Bond role, the spy had never been killed until the most recent film.

Ending Daniel Craig’s 15-year tenure, No Time To Die opposed it’s title as James Bond was killed by Bioterrorist Lyutsifer Safin (played by Rami Malek).

It comes after the director said he thinks it would be ‘wonderful’ for the next film in the franchise to be directed by a woman. 

Speaking on a new actor taking on the role and the directorial direction, he told The Guardian that the director should ‘evolve’.

‘I think that the actor playing Bond is going to evolve, the director has to evolve.I think it would be wonderful to see a woman directing Bond. I think it would be wonderful,’ he told the publication.

It is not yet known who will direct the next James Bond film, or who will portray the eponymous spy. 

With much speculation on the latter question, stars such as Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill and Rege-Jean Page are all among the rumoures stars for the role.
