Forbush’ Caroline Myers returns a serve at No. 2 singles.
The Forbush and Elkin girl’s tennis teams stepped out of their respective conferences on Thursday afternoon with a good opportunity to build some momentum heading into the second half of league action.
The Lady Falcons used the 6-3 win at Elkin Municipal Park to pick up their sixth-straight victory and 11th in their last 12. Forbush made it seven straight with an 8-1 win at Surry Central on Monday; currently 8-1 in league play, the Lady Falcons trail leader East Surry by one game. They face the Lady Cardinals on Thursday at home.
The two clubs elected to play one, eight-game pro set match and a number of the matches were particularly close.
Both the No. 1 and No. 5 singles concluded in 8-6 decisions with the two teams splitting the wins. Elkin’s Julie Cortez bested Forbush’s Lauren Rockett at No. 1 while the Lady Falcons’ Jane Helton defeated Tania Lorenzo, of the Lady Elks, at No. 5.
Forbush (12-2) broke the tie with a pair of 8-5 wins from Caroline Myers and Salem Parker at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. The duo also claimed an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles against Cortez and Ella Kleinkesel.
Katie Starling claimed the win at No. 6 singles (over Bronwyn Sloop) to give the Lady Falcons a 4-2 advantage at the conclusion of single play. Alice Gwyn also captured victory for the Lady Elks (4-7) when the senior bested Emma Sorrell, 8-4.
Sorrell rebounded from the defeat when she teamed with senior teammate Rockett to earn an 8-4 win over Gwyn and Lopez in No. 2 doubles.
Kendall Eads and Sloop were victorious at No. 3 doubles for Elkin, which resumed Northwest 1A Conference play against Starmount on Tuesday, with an 8-2 win over Helton and Starling.
