New voting equipment will be in place for Yadkinville’s municipal election this fall.
Filing for municipal elections for the town of Yadkinville will begin on Friday, July 2 at 12 noon. The filing fee is $5 and the filing period will run until 12 noon on July 16. Open seats for this election cycle include the Yadkinville mayoral seat, currently held by Eddie Normal; and two commissioner seats currently held by Scott Winebarger and Chris Matthews.
One Stop (Early Voting) for the Yadkinville town election will begin on October 14 and end on Saturday October 30 at 3:00 pm. Times for One Stop voting will be determined soon by the Yadkin Board of Elections. The One Stop location will be upstairs in the Planning, Permitting and Elections building. Absentee by mail begins on Oct. 3 and the last day to request an Absentee by mail ballot is Oct. 26. Dates are subject to change. The Election Day Precinct on Nov. 2 will be at Yadkinville Elementary School gymnasium from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.
Election filing for the March 2022 primary is scheduled to begin in December. County offices up for reelection in 2022 include three County Commissioner seats, Sheriff, Clerk of Court, Register of Deeds, and Coroner. Three Yadkin County Board of Education seats will also be on the March 2022 ballot.
During the upcoming election in Yadkinville new voting machines will be used to tabulate ballots. The Yadkin Board of Elections purchased the new equipment in May, said Board of Elections Director Elaine Barnes. Each county in the state was awarded federal HAVA (HELP AMERICA VOTE ACT) Grant Funds to use accordingly. The Election Board members voted unanimously on February 11, 2021 at a board meeting to put their awarded amount toward the funding of new voting machines, and the County Commissioners approved the purchase.
“There were many steps required from the State Board of Elections to meet the requirements to be able to make the purchase,” Barnes explained. “One of the requirements was to have an actual Election Simulation test that was conducted on February 26 before the purchase was completed. The older equipment was purchased last in 2006. The M100 voting machine will be replaced with the DS200, and the Automark (ADA voting machine) will be replaced by the Expressvote machine. The machines have upgraded security measures which is one of the many added features.”
