Falcons earn wrestling wins | Yadkin Ripple

The Falcons had several wrestlers earn wins at the WPAC Tournament.

WINSTON-SALEM — Last month, the Forbush Falcons wrestling team competed in the Western Piedmont Athletic Conference tournament at Walkertown High School.

In the 106 pound quarterfinals, Jose Pina-Velasquez received a bye which took him straight to the semifinals. In his semifinals match, Pina-Velasquez took the win over Walkertown’s Amara Mullins with a fall at the 0:42 mark. The win advanced Pina-Velasquez to the first place match where he faced off against Landon Pack from Surry Central. It was a hard fought match between both athletes, as the match came down to a decision. Pina-Velasquez took the win over Pack, 8-4, to take first place in the 106 pound weight class.

Next up for the Falcons was Eli Thomas who competed in the 120 pound class. Thomas received a bye in the quarterfinals, then took a win over Xavier Salazar in the semifinals. Thomas advanced to the championship match where he easily took the win. Thomas earned a 7-0 win over West Stokes’ Cole Waddell to be named the 120 pound champion.

The Falcons continued their dominating performance in the 126 pound class, with Edwin Pozo earning the championship win. Pozo took an 8-6 win in the quarterfinals then a 16-0, 4:31 win in the championship match.

The 132 pound quarterfinals, saw Miguel Gonzalez from Surry Central take the win over Forbush’s Jacob Myers (Fall 3:37).

Luke Hurley competed in the 195 pound class for the Falcons, where he earned the championship win. In the semifinals, Hurley took the win over Joseph Ravit from North Surry (Fall 2:19). In the first place match, Hurley won over Sam Whitaker from Surry Central by a 4-2 decision.

In the 220 quarterfinals Atkins’ Jose Diaz took the win over Baylee Ramey (Fall 1:41). In the 285 quarterfinals Atkins’ Johnny Peake won over Regan Ramey (Fall 0:36)

WPAC Tournament team scores were: Surry Central 182, West Stokes 97.5, North Surry 96, Atkins 79, Forbush 78.5, Walkertown 77, and North Forsyth 59.
