Wine, dine, meet the artists and make your pick for the People’s Choice Award during the July 1 opening ceremony of the Yadkin Arts Council 10th Annual Juried Art Show. The ceremony begins at 5 p.m. July 1 in the Welborn Gallery of the Yadkin Cultural Arts Center, 226 E. Main St. in Yadkinville. Wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres will be served. The exhibit runs July 1 through August 27 and includes online voting via Facebook for a People’s Choice Award, with a $150 prize for winners in the 2D and 3D categories. Voting runs through July 15.

This year’s exhibit juror was Winston-Salem artist Affee Vickers. According to a statement from the arts council, Affee was chosen for his ingenuity in the areas of glass, acrylic, stainless steel, titanium, abstract art, oil paintings, and sculptures, and for his discerning eye and deep appreciation for artistic value. First prize in the juried show is $1,250; awards will be announced at the July 1 opening festivities.

Page to Stage Goes Virtual

This past spring amid the limitations of the pandemic, the Yadkin Arts Council transitioned their Page to Stage school programming to virtual performances and distributed the filmed performances to Yadkin County schools digitally.

The initiative was made possible by using a new camera system installed in 2020 and also through grant funding from the Clemmons Community Foundation’ Wayne A. Shore Endowment Fund. The program brought theater performances to schools during a time when students could not visit theaters in person. Page to Stage takes children’s books and develops them into stage performances while sharing copies of the books for Yadkin County students to read, as well. The program reaches students at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

This year’s programming presented “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare” and “The Day the Crayons Quit.” Both productions were directed by Associate Artistic Director Jessie Grant and the featured cast members were students from the Willingham Performing Arts Academy. The Yadkin Arts Council also presented the original historical musical “Douglass/Dunbar,” which was written and directed by Founding Artistic Director Ron Stacker Thompson. Actors from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts as well as local community members were hired to participate in the performances.

In a statement, the arts council also thanked the Yadkin County School System, Duke Energy Carolinas, Sheetz, and the NC Arts Council for supporting the project.
