Moonlighting, a freelancer platform that uses blockchain, was acquired by CareerGig, itself a freelancer platform. The deal is effective today.

“The combined technologies of both CareerGig and Moonlighting will further enhance our capabilities to offer enhanced sourcing, matching, hiring and retention to companies looking to hire contractors and freelancers,” said Greg Kihlstrom, CareerGig’s CEO and co-founder.

Both the Moonlighting and CareerGig platforms use blockchain and artificial intelligence, according to the company. CareerGig launched in July 2020.

Moonlighting was founded in 2014 and has a network of more than 850,000 freelancers and small businesses. It was founded by Jeff Tennery, Ritesh Johar and Roy Slater.

Tennery, who serves as Moonlighting’s CEO, will join CareerGig as chief business development officer and lead efforts to grow B2B sales.

CareerGig is based in Arlington, Virginia and Palo Alto, California. The company noted its network provides insurance, financial and education benefits to its freelancers.

Serving on CareerGig’s advisory board is Banks Baker, Google’s head of global product partnerships, search content.
