Reflecting on ripple effects, finding hope in Out of Shadows event | The Courier

news, latest-news,

THERE will be 122 names read out of loved ones lost to suicide in this year’s Out of the Shadows event. Organiser know there are likely many more names held in people’s hearts. Out of the Shadows is about reflecting, finding support and hope in suicide prevention for every ripple effect from a life lost. Ballarat and District Suicide Awareness Network chairman Des Hudson said the pandemic had restricted a lot of vital community events but it was clear this was an event the community did not want to forget. A virtual service has been created to stream live on the network’s social media channels on Satruday from 5.50am. While the group is unable to gather and walk together, Ballarat police Leading Senior Constable Hudson said the 20-minute reflection aimed to finish with daybreak – the sign of hope on which the event always walks into. “Hopefully this can capture the atmosphere and mood with sensitivity for families and others to remember loved ones,” Leading Senior Constable Hudson said. “We had a piece from Tony Lovett and friends, a message for young and old.” READ MORE: Leading Senior Constable Hudson said people could choose to watch the service later in their own time. The aim in getting up early and watching as it unfolds was to promote a sense of connection while not being able to be together. Out of the Shadows walk, held in partnership with Lifeline Ballarat, is traditionally held the weekend following World Suicide Prevention Day. This global awareness day was on Thursday, which this year coincided with national RU OK? Day. Leading Senior Constable Hudson said mental health had been an ongoing concern in society throughout the pandemic and RU OK? Day was a good prompt reminding people to keep checking in with each other – not just on one day. If Out of the Shadows triggers emotions for you, the network encourages people to call Lifeline on 13 11 14. Have you signed up to The Courier’s variety of news emails?
